2009 Program Accomplishments
Conferences, Workshops & Site Visits
More than 1,500 industry professionals attended one of 22 educational events including the Spring Green Building Conference and Fall Sustainable Communities and Land Use Conference. An additional 200 local government staff, including planners, public works professionals, and elected officials attended events.
Program Evaluation
Workshop and tour evaluations indicate 2009 green building events provided some of the highest quality content in the region.
Demonstration Projects
Whatcom Museum, Community Co-op Second Store, LEED for Homes, Zero Waste jobsites, Green Roofs, plus dozens of other LEED and low impact development projects were established.
Tools & Resources
Distributed high quality educational print and resources through City/County permit center displays and at related events. Electronic materials made available online and distributed through regular e-mails to our 500+ program subscribers plus 4,500 website visits/month. Creation of a 2010 Construction Waste Recycling Toolkit, Advanced Method and Materials and local LEED case studies.
Policy changes to remove barriers and create incentives
- Developed the FIVE/12 Agenda, successfully removing five barriers for LEED and BuiltGreen projects within the City of Bellingham.
- Released the FIVE/12 Executive Summary highlighting collaboration from 60 industry professionals indicating the greatest challenges to incorporating green building locally.
- Support for urban village planning and the incorporation of LEED for Neighborhood Development design guidelines.
Imagine this! Eco-friendly home & landscape tour
In its 7th year, this tour attracted over 350 community members and has become the largest tour (green or otherwise) North of Seattle.

30+ news articles, permit center display development, transformational lecture series, community presentations, outreach to neighborhood associations and thousands of visits to our website looking for information and referrals related to green building, high performance LEED buildings and smart growth.
