2016 KAPOW! State Street
The 2016 KAPOW Placemaking Design Competition will engage our community to design inexpensive, individual tactical urbanism projects that make spaces along State Street more lively and enjoyable.
With the help of local partners, Sustainable Connections is hosting a Placemaking Competition to transform underutilized spots on State Street, Bellingham with YOUR idea for a lively destination that builds a stronger, healthier community.
We are asking you to design a “tactical urbanism” project that enhances our Downtown vitality.
Applications Due: February 15, 2016
Selected Entries Pitch Ideas to Community: April 21, 2016
The goal of the competition is to engage our community in designing inexpensive, individual projects that make small places along N. State St. more lively and enjoyable. These design ideas should help to reflect our unique community identity, attract people, activate inactive spaces, provide amenities and promote people's health, happiness, and well-being. Winning ideas will be selected based on their creativity, innovation, potential to be realized and social impact.
The KAPOW competition has been created to generate “tactical urbanism” ideas for future implementation. Selected individuals and teams will be given the opportunity to pitch their idea to the community. Winning ideas will receive seed funding to build out their idea. Sustainable Connections and competition partners will provide assistance to project teams through permitting, design and planning support. We will also help to secure potential grants for the cost of construction.
