Online Auction supports Sustainable Connections,  beginning farms

BELLINGHAM, WA—The Sustainable Connections fourth Annual Bid Local First! online auction opens November 21, offering a stunning array of unique Bellingham experiences and retail items. The auction will occur in conjunction with Buy Local Week and hopes to encourage Whatcom County residents to support the local community while holiday shopping. Proceeds  for the auction benefit Sustainable Connections' Food to Bank On beginning farmer training project.

Ten beginning farmers are currently participating in the Food To Bank On, and receiving business training, farmer mentorship, market connections, and also are paid to deliver a portion of their produce, meats or eggs to a local food bank or shelter.  Funds raised through the auction will help pay for beginning farmer education, and the food for food banks and shelters.

“The great thing about this auction is its focus on unique local experiences that you truly can’t find anywhere else,” said Erin McCain-Anderson, events coordinator in charge of the auction for Sustainable Connections. “Bid Local First lets you do your holiday shopping from home, support your local economy and contribute to a great project that helps gives beginning farms the crucial resources they need.”

There are already over 40 items donated from local businesses, with more coming in every day, McCain-Anderson says. Some of the fantastic items so far on this year’s line up include a paella dinner for 15 from Paellaworks, “A Visitor in Raingear” salmon fishing experience with Lummi Island Wild, an array of local yoga and pilates classes—with more items added daily.

Businesses who wish to donate items will be featured on the auction website through early December. Donations are open to Sustainable Connections members only. Click here for membership information.

Visit the auction at www.biddingforgood.com/sconnect to see all of the donated items from local business owners (new items are added every day). Bidding is open November 21 through December 4.
