Lincoln Green: A commercial green roof workshop & solar celebration

BELLINGHAM, WA – The Bellingham Housing Authority has embarked on a full scale, nation-leading retrofit of Lincoln Square, including an install of the largest green roof and solar installation in Bellingham.

Lincoln Green, a green roof tour and solar installation celebration event will provide a snapshot of a full scale commercial green roof retrofit utilizing the latest technology.
The roof covers three larger sections totaling 6,200 square feet.

Attendees will tour the three roof tops, gain experience and learn the methodologies of low impact development through the installation and lessons learned on this roof.

“An established living roof can bring countless benefits to the table and when designed properly can efficiently purify surrounding air and water, reduce storm water run-off, reduce interior noise infiltration, and further insulate the building for increased energy efficiency, said Tim Eshuis, corporate secretary of Hytech Roofing, who installed Lincoln Square’s green roof. “We are excited about the recent push towards green construction practices in our community.”

Workshop attendees will take away usable information on:
•    Engineering and design
•    Material Selection
•    Suitable waterproof membrane/drainage
•    Appropriate plant/soil medium
•    Maintenance

Local experts will be onsite to answer and discuss green roof questions and needs.
Following the Green Roof tour, a rootbeer float social will celebrate the lighting up of the largest solar installation in Whatcom County, full of energy efficiency upgrades too.

Participants will then have the chance to see the solar installation first hand and hear about the benefits of the project and how it’s working from owners, installers and community leaders’ perspectives. Root beer floats will be on hand for all those who RSVP.  This event is free.

“From my perspective the Housing Authority and their partners have really done this project right,” said Alex Ramel, Sustainable Connections Energy Program Manager. “They have a smart mix of tried and true energy efficiency steps and innovative technologies and these buildings will be nicer and more comfortable and will have dramatically reduced operating costs. They are saving money, cutting pollution, creating jobs and giving the construction sector of the local economy a much needed boost.”
