Energy & Green Building

The Energy and Green Building Program creates a healthy built environment for people and the planet. We are working to facilitate a local economy powered by the efficient use of clean, renewable, and secure energy and buildings that live lightly on, or are even restorative to, our environment. Sustainable Connections is blazing a trail and making our region a leader in clean energy and buildings.

Achievements by the community energy challenge

In 2017, Bellingham was a finalist in Georgetown University’s Energy Prize for saving almost 50 billion BTUs of energy, and reduced carbon emissions by 11,977 metric tons. Bellingham was noted as the most creative and inclusive city by engaging residents broadly and targeting harder-to-reach sectors of the population, including renters and multi-family units.

The Energy & Green Building program has been involved in several Solarize Whatcom Campaigns helping residents and business owners easily navigate solar installation by providing free workshops and site assessments, brokering low interest rates, and assisting with every step of the contract and installation process. We have had nearly 60 contracts completed over the years.

In 2025, the Energy and Green Building team assisted about 25 nonprofits and minority owned businesses in Whatcom, Skagit, and Island Counties to reduce 474k lbs of CO2 emissions from going into environment through investing $800,000 in the local economy’s energy efficiency. This work was funded by the Climate Commitment Act through the Department of Commerce, in partnership with the City of Bellingham, Whatcom County, and Northwest Clean Air Agency.
