RARE_300pxWith sustainability and recycling being the heart and foundation of Bellingham, the fifth annual Recycled Art and Resource Expo (RARE) is finally here. RARE is a two-day festival that celebrates creative reuse in the arts and other industries. The event will take place on April 7 & 8 around downtown Bellingham.  Below is a list of all the wonderful, creative, re-use events happening RARE weekend!



ReArt Exhibit

Nearly 30 artists exhibiting works made from 75% or more recycled materials.

Pan’s Whimsey: An exhibit of fanciful creatures

Pandora Daugherty uses a variety of reused, recycled and thrown away items to create each piece.

Second Nature: A Mystery Box Challenge

Works on display thru April
Participants received a box of pre-selected random reclaimed materials from The RE Store and used them to create an art piece that will be on display at Wandering Oaks Gallery through the month of April.

Stand & Resist: Art Exhibit

An exhibition of visual art focused on the climate and fossil fuel threats to our home in the Salish Sea region, the resistance to those threats, and visions for the future.

Recycled & Altered Books into Art with Rachel Simpson

How to transform a discarded worn book into a creative work of art. You can make your altered book into an art journal, writing journal, photo album, or a scrapbook! $5 supply fee.

Introduction to Weaving
Session starts Saturday April 8, 10am – 12pm

Note: This class runs three consecutive Saturdays from 4/8 to 4/22. The first workshop will be from 10am – noon and the last two will be from 10am – 1pm. Recycled Fused Glass Workshop
Saturday, April 8 time 11am @ Wandering Oaks Gallery 126 W Holly St.
Each student will create 1-2 pieces of Fused Glass artwork from window glass, during the 2-3 hour class. All tools, materials and instruction will be provided for a class fee of $40. Artwork will be available for pick up the following day. Class size is limited, so please call (360-788-5454) or stop by the gallery at 126 W. Holly to preregister.

Recycled Book Roses with Rachel Simpson

Learn how to make your own paper roses with recycled book paper, watercolors, inks, papercraft, and your imagination! $5 supply fee .

No-Sew Braided Rugs
Saturday April 8, 2 – 4pm @ Ragfinery 1421 N Forest St
Come learn how to craft a beautiful no sew braided rug. This four strand technique eliminates the need for sewing braids together and results in a sturdy rug able to withstand the modern washer and dryer. Pre-registration is required. An evening of music, spoken word, and essays by regional Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists working at the intersection of culture, place, and threats to our home on the Salish Sea. Acquire tickets through EventBrite.
